On 5 April 2026, Yassine Bounou turns 35. The Moroccan and Arab goalkeeping great has risen from Wydad to Sevilla and Al-Hilal, though a recent dip has stirred concern before the World Cup.
Goal.com charts his path via Atlético Madrid, Zaragoza and Girona to Sevilla, where he won two Europa Leagues and the 2021-2022 Zamora, building a big-game reputation.
He hit global renown at Qatar 2022, anchoring Morocco’s historic semi-final run. He won the Spain shoot-out and kept the most clean sheets.
At AFCON 2025 in Morocco he won Best Goalkeeper, shining in the semi-final against Nigeria. CAF then upheld Morocco’s appeal and awarded the title, which Senegal are contesting at CAS.
Since joining Al-Hilal in summer 2023, he has shone, notably a stoppage-time penalty save against Real Madrid at the 2025 Club World Cup and helping beat Manchester City.
His standing invites comparison with Essam El-Hadary and Badou Zaki. El-Hadary has said he currently regards Bono among the best alongside Mohamed El-Shenawy.
A recent dip, including a draw with Al-Taawoun and headed goals from crosses, sparked scrutiny of goalkeeper and defence. Opinions split, and shoulder and thigh issues disrupted rhythm.
Morocco face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, starting against Brazil. Club form may worry fans, yet Bounou often raises his level for the Atlas Lions behind an experienced backline.
Al-Hilal fans know elite keepers have dips. Strong numbers and marquee displays endure, and with fitness restored and structure tightened, he is likely to reassert authority.
