Borussia Dortmund missed their shot of redemption despite dominating Real Madrid in the first-half with the Spanish giants lifting their 15th Champions League title after overcoming the Bundesliga side 2-0.
Despite defeat at the final hurdle Gregor Kobel believes that their Champions League run, which has seen knockout wins over Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, showcases that BVB can, in fact, compete at the highest level.
“We played an outstanding Champions League campaign and showed that we can compete at the top international level,” said Kobel (h/t: Ruhr Nachrichten). “I hope that each of us is extremely proud.”
Speaking on Borussia Dortmund’s performance, Kobel added: “At the moment you are just disappointed after such a game and such an opportunity. You probably don’t get too many chances against Real Madrid and they are always dangerous. We had our chances. We have to make more of them. In the end they will strike with their quality, but it’s a huge success that we’re here.”
Chances went begging for Borussia Dortmund as Niclas Füllkrug, Karim Adeyemi and Marcel Sabitzer all came close in the first-half, but Real and the Champions League is inevitable at this point. The Spanish side survived the onslaught and goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr. after the break secured Los Blancos their 15th Champions League title.
