Borussia Dortmund head into Tuesday’s 2026/27 Champions League opener against Villarreal at Signal Iduna Park on a three-match winning run, having recovered strongly since a 1-2 DFL-Supercup defeat to Bayern Munich.
At the weekend they trailed 2-0 to TSG Hoffenheim before a late rally delivered a second Bundesliga victory in as many matches. Villarreal, by contrast, are without a win after four games and sit 16th in La Liga with two points. According to BuLi News, the hosts also have a lengthy absentee list to manage.
This is only the second competitive meeting between the sides. The first came in last season’s Champions League, when Dortmund won 4-0 at Signal Iduna Park, with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice.
Dortmund will again be without Nico Schlotterbeck as he continues his recovery from the ankle injury suffered at the World Cup. Giannis Konstantelias is sidelined after an ACL tear on his Bundesliga debut, captain Emre Can remains out long term, and Ramy Bensebaini is suspended. Filippo Mané is a major doubt after going off injured during the Hoffenheim win.
Daniel Svensson and Konstantinos Karetsas missed Monday training, but it is thought to have been precautionary and both are expected to be available. Villarreal have concerns over Juan Foyth and Carlos Romero, who are doubtful after each missed the 3-2 defeat to Deportivo La Coruña despite their side leading twice.
