José Boto says the volatility of Brazilian football sets a different challenge for club management, contrasting it with the calmer decision making he has known in Europe.
"Here in Brazil there is a daily trial by fire for management, because there are many emotional issues we are not used to in Europe. We make decisions in a more rational way there, there is not this emotion," he told A Bola.
"Any decision here is always emotional and it always has a big impact, especially with the media and supporters. We are in this position to make those decisions and to take the consequences."
The director faced a test early this year when Flamengo’s form dipped compared with 2025, the board dismissed Filipe Luís and appointed Leonardo Jardim. He said the change did not reflect on Filipe Luís’ worth, adding: "Sometimes, to keep winning, you need to change."
Under Jardim, Flamengo reached the World Cup pause out of the Copa do Brasil, second in the Brasileirão and with the best group stage campaign in the Libertadores.
The squad now enters a short break, then will hold a mid-season camp in Portugal, in the Algarve, where they could play up to three friendlies before returning.
