José Boto has stopped short of confirming he will remain Flamengo’s director of football in 2026, saying his future depends on president Bap after the Carioca title.

According to Globo.com, the Portuguese said he needs calm to work, accepts contracts mean being ready to leave, and that he leaves clubs without rancour. He added that Bap invited him but has not told him about continuity, and questions on whether he stays should be put to the president.

Bap is already seeking a replacement as director of football. Boto continues daily duties at the Ninho, assisting Leonardo Jardim after the work of Filipe Luís, and will do so until a successor is defined.

The president has decided to change the football department and has sounded out options while assessing the structure. Edu Gaspar, who is leaving Nottingham Forest, has been approached and is viewed as a leading candidate.

No final move has been taken because the club is weighing whether to appoint a single decision-maker, as Boto now operates, or split duties between an executive with market knowledge and a dressing-room figure. Boto will stay only until Bap appoints his replacement or replacements.

Relations have deteriorated around the current director, with resistance from members of the squad and staff at Ninho do Urubu. His methods and distance from players have been questioned, and a change is seen by the president as a peace offering to a group applying pressure.
