A controversial Brasileirão moment on Sunday saw José Herrera’s 12th-minute goal for Bragantino against Grêmio ruled out after a VAR review, officials determining the ball had not fully crossed the line.

According to Globo.com, the forward met a cross with a free header and the ball struck defender Wallace on the goal line with Weverton in goal.

Referee Felipe Fernandes de Lima initially confirmed the goal after a brief pause, then reversed his decision following input from the video assistant.

VAR images showed the ball riding up the Grêmio defender’s body and, in the broadcast angle available, it had not entirely crossed the goal line.

The call sparked strong protests from the hosts before play resumed.
