Brahim Hemdani has been appointed Algeria head coach, replacing Vladimir Petkovic after a World Cup round of 16 exit to Switzerland, 0-2. He is 48.

According to L'Équipe, the FAF’s federal bureau promoted him on Saturday, weeks after he took charge of the under-21s in July. The former international won four caps in 2008. Antar Yahia and Moussa Saïb will serve as his assistants.

With the under-21s, Hemdani delivered Mediterranean Games gold in Italy this summer, Algeria’s first in 51 years. His side went unbeaten throughout the tournament, strengthening his candidacy as the federation sought a new direction.

A former midfielder for Cannes, Strasbourg, Marseille and Glasgow Rangers, his playing career outweighs a modest coaching CV.
