Brahim Hemdani appointed Algeria head coach | OneFootball

Brahim Hemdani has been appointed Algeria head coach by the Algerian Football Federation. The decision, reported by state television on Saturday, follows the exit of Vladimir Petkovic.

Born in Colombes near Paris, the 48-year-old was developed at AS Cannes before spells at Strasbourg and Marseille from 2001 to 2005, then Glasgow Rangers from 2005 to 2010. He won two caps for Algeria and has limited coaching experience, guiding FC Marignane-Gignac to France’s third tier between 2022 and 2025.

He steps up after leading Algeria’s under-21s to Mediterranean Games gold in Taranto, Italy, last week, the country’s first such title in 51 years.

Former national captain Antar Yahia has been appointed assistant coach, while another ex-captain, Moussa Saïb, becomes general manager. Hemdani is expected to take charge in the coming days to prepare September’s squad list for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Algeria host Zambia in Tizi Ouzou on 25 September, then face Burundi four days later. The federation ended Petkovic’s tenure in early August despite an extension running to 2028. Under the Swiss coach, Algeria qualified for the World Cup in North America this summer but went out in the round of 32 to Switzerland, 2-0. They also departed January’s AFCON in Morocco in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 defeat by Nigeria.
