In the event that Dayot Upamecano leaves FC Bayern, the Säbener Straße has long been thinking about possible successors. One name that has come up again is Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan – a defender of international stature
FC Bayern are pressing ahead with their plans for the coming season – and the future of Dayot Upamecano plays a central role in this. The French centre-back is undisputed in sporting terms, but contract talks are dragging on. Those responsible want to be prepared in the event of his departure. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are therefore sounding out the market for top-class alternatives. One name in particular stands out: Alessandro Bastoni
As the portal TeamTALK reports, the German record champions are among those interested in the Italian international from Inter Milan. Bastoni is said to be open to a move next summer – a constellation that has aroused the interest of several European heavyweights. In addition to FC Bayern, FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, among others, are said to be keeping a close eye on the situation. However, Liverpool FC’s interest seems to be particularly concrete at the moment, with the departure of Ibrahima Konaté on the cards

From a sporting point of view, Bastoni fits Munich’s requirements profile almost perfectly. The 26-year-old has been one of the most consistent central defenders in Europe for years, is a regular at Inter Milan and an integral part of the Italian national team. His greatest strength lies in his build-up play: Bastoni is left-footed, resistant to pressing and can open up the game from defence with precise passes – qualities that play a central role in Vincent Kompany’s system
He also has international experience: Bastoni has already won several Serie A titles with Inter and was European champion with Italy in 2021. It is precisely this mix of quality, maturity and winning mentality that FC Bayern is looking for in its defence – especially if a leading player like Upamecano were to leave
However, a potential transfer would be anything but cheap. Bastoni is still under contract with Inter until 2028 and his market value is estimated at around €80 million by Transfermarkt. Inter Milan are also regarded as tough negotiating partners who are under no pressure to make a move. For Bayern, such a deal would represent a clear investment in the future – both financially and in sporting terms
Bayern were already looking closely at the defender in 2022, when he was seen as a potential successor to Niklas Süle, who left the club for Borussia Dortmund. At the time, Munich are said to have even spoken to Bastoni’s advisor to sound out the possibility of a move. The Italian was still under contract with Inter until 2024 and, with a market value of around €60 million, would have been significantly cheaper
Whether Bastoni actually becomes a concrete topic again depends largely on the Upamecano situation. If Bayern manage to tie the Frenchman down long-term, a mega transfer in central defence should be unnecessary. However, if no agreement is reached, Bastoni would be an obvious, albeit costly, solution.
