Thwarting all Antwerp offensive attempts, Brandon Mechele helped Club to a clean sheet and a first win in these Champions’ Play-Offs.
“This feels great", Brandon Mechele said after the game. “Finally those three points and the clean sheet, that's something important for us defenders too. This turned out to be a successful afternoon for us. We deserved some points in the past game too, but unfortunately it didn't work out well. Today's win is extra comforting for us, and particularly for the fans. It was a vital game for them, signing on from the moment we arrived by bus. It gave us a boost, and the atmosphere was thrilling. We were pushed forward by the fans, and they kept backing us.”
The start of the game came with some exploratory play, however. "The first half was a bit like chess, testing out what went well and what didn't. It's vital to keep a firm organisation and to keep them from going for the break. We were positioned well, but we couldn't pose enough threat ourselves. We did better in the second half, with two fine goals by Casper Nielsen. Romeo Vermant came on well, and had a great assist in store teeing up Casper for his second goal. It's a good thing that those coming on also pull their weight, particularly by the end of the season when everyone's tired. It gives a boost to the team.”
Club finally managed to keep hold of a lead against Antwerp. “We were in full control last week after that 0-2, but then they scored in their first chance with a bit of luck. We could have done better there in those situations. Today we just kept a clean sheet. Now there's two more games to finish this season in style. It would be great to clock off with two wnis.” (KN)
