The game took place on 9 July 1950 at the Maracanã in the final round-robin group, there was no single final. Spain and Uruguay joined Brazil and Sweden in the decisive stage.

Sweden were the only amateur side at the tournament in Brazil, their players were filmed drinking coffee and relaxing before kick-off at the Maracanã.

Wearing white, Brazil were irresistible, the side built around Vasco’s Expresso da Vitória. The club supplied eight players to the 1950 squad, and six played that day: Barbosa, Augusto, Danilo, Maneca, Chico and Ademir de Menezes.

Ademir was the star, scoring four. Chico added two and Maneca struck the other, while Sune Andersson replied for Sweden from the penalty spot.

The display helped 'Queixada' finish with nine goals, still the most by a Brazilian at a single World Cup.

One of his goals from that tournament was only recognised 71 years later. The first Brazil goal in the 6-1 over Spain had long been listed as a José Parra own goal after a deflection. Using records from the time, including video, the CBF wrote to Fifa to credit Ademir, and the change was later made.
