Corinthians are expected to extend Zakaria Labyad’s contract into 2027 after a knee injury that will outlast his deal to 31 December 2026. He is likely to be out until at least February 2027.

Labyad tore the ACL in his left knee and damaged his meniscus during the 0-0 draw with Athletico-PR at Neo Química Arena, and surgery will be scheduled once the swelling reduces. "By law, any worker injured on duty has their contract suspended. For a professional footballer it is no different, and a deal cannot end at expiry, it must be extended until the player returns fully fit, with wages maintained," said lawyer Sérgio Schwartsman to Meu Timao.

"If the club ends the deal at its term, the athlete can seek reinstatement in court and all salaries, and demand the club fund treatment," he said. "They may also claim moral damages, and the General Sports Law requires insurance that could have to be matched."

"Keeping the contract is the club’s obligation and the player’s right," he said. "If the player does not want to maintain the link, he can leave, but it must be formally documented, preferably with both sides assisted by lawyers and union homologation."

Before the injury, any stay beyond 2026 depended on performance clauses, with automatic renewal to end of 2027 if undisclosed targets were met. Signed in February, the Moroccan was in his best spell, with 18 appearances, three starts, two goals and two assists.
