José Mourinho has made a shock return to the dugout by taking over at Benfica just weeks after being sacked by Fenerbahçe.

Ironically, it was a defeat to the Portuguese giants in the Champions League playoff at the end of August that saw the Istanbul outfit part ways with the 62-year-old.

But following a 3-2 loss to Qarabag in the competition on Tuesday night after going two goals in front, Benfica swiftly parted ways with Bruno Lage and have turned to a familiar face to take over.

It marks a return to the place where his coaching career began in 2000, when Mourinho was appointed Benfica boss for the first role of his career but he lasted just nine league games before departing.

This is the first time Mourinho has coached in his homeland since leaving Porto for Chelsea in 2004.
