The attacker has missed most of the season so far and was expected to return from an ongoing issue this week or next. But Maresca had bad news on that front:

“He’s not available for tomorrow for sure, [or for] Barcelona, for sure, Arsenal, for sure. Unfortunately he had an accident at home two days ago and he hit his toe. It’s nothing important, but for sure he’s not back next week.

Pressed for more details, the manager simply confirmed again that he he “hit his toe at home.”

“We don’t know. The only thing we know is that he’s not available for this week, next week… It can happen. I wake up many times during the night to go to the toilet. I hit my head, my legs, my everything, so it can happen.”

Some have speculated that this latest injury is made up, and Chelsea are just protecting Palmer because his long standing groin problem hasn’t recovered. We’re not sure why that would be – why not just say he needs another few weeks out? What to they stand to lose by telling the truth there?

Having said that, the story doesn’t really stand up – what could he have done to his toe that is so bad Maresca can confidently rule him out for more than a week? Has anyone stubbed their toe that badly in history?

In other Cole Palmer news…

Palmer has been bulking up in the gym during his time out, and that’s getting some fans a little worry that he might lose some of his sparkle. We’re not so worried.

Yesterday saw some duelling transfer news as both Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs disagreed over the future of a Chelsea player.
