Bremen star Schmid to make surprise Serie A switch

Kicker report Romano Schmid is in an advanced stage of completing a transfer to Frosinone from Werder Bremen. The Austrian international failed to reach an agreement with his Bundesliga club to extend his contract that will expire next summer.

Accordingly, both parties are working to find the perfect solution, with the club keen on receiving offers. Although it’ll not match the €12 million transfer fee they got for Mio Backhaus from SC Freiburg, Bremen will receive a high single-digit million from the newly-promoted Serie A outfit.

As Kicker reported, the transfer fee could even reach double-digit with bonuses. The move is expected to be completed in the coming days as Bremen will immediately look for a replacement.

Schmid officially takes Leonardo Bittencourt’s number 10 shirt at Bremen, but he might not wear it in a competitive game for the club he played for more than seven years. Frosinone hope to avoid a fourth Serie A relegation after the US fund Clara Vista acquired over 80% of the shares.

They already signed Anouar El Azzouzi from Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hoffenheim’s long-serving defender Kevin Akpoguma this summer. There are also rumors that Akpoguma’s former Hoffenheim teammate Florian Grillitsch could join them as a free agent.

Schmid registered more than 10 direct goal contributions in each of the last three seasons. He also scored Austria’s first goal at the 2026 World Cup in their 3-1 win over debutants Jordan.
