Stade Brestois captain Brendan Chardonnet will miss several matches after being injured in training on Saturday.
The club said in a statement on Monday afternoon that the centre-back left Saturday morning’s session early and has a calf muscle tear.
The length of his lay-off depends on the severity of the lesion, but he is set to be out for at least several weeks and might not return before the first international break, which follows matchday five on 18, 19 and 20 September. That unusually long window, more than two weeks, could aid his rehabilitation.
In the meantime, Brest have only two centre-backs available with five days to go before their Ligue 1 opener at Le Mans on Saturday at 20:45.
The options are 19-year-old Raphaël Le Guen and new signing Gautier Lloris, who joined from Le Havre on a free transfer last week and has not featured in any pre-season matches.
