Brenden Aaronson will learn today whether he has made the United States squad for the home World Cup, and he hopes two Leeds United team-mates turn selection disappointment into motivation.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Aaronson is expected to be named when the USMNT reveal their list later today, having featured in the October, November and March camps. His name also appeared in what was said to be a leaked version of the squad.
The 25-year-old has 57 caps and nine goals, and he played four times at the 2022 World Cup.
If his involvement is confirmed he would join Switzerland’s Noak Okafor and Sweden’s Gabi Gudmundsson as Leeds representatives at the tournament. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Anton Stach both missed out with England and Germany.
Calvert-Lewin scored 14 goals and was central to Leeds’ approach as a target man, while Stach created a huge number of chances, showed his defensive qualities and added five goals.
Aaronson said he was devastated for the pair, felt both deserved to go after consistently high-level seasons, and believes they will use the setback as fuel for next season.
He added that, if selected, he would be super excited to play a World Cup on home soil with his family present, calling it a dream he would never forget.
