Brenden Aaronson played a crucial role in helping Leeds United earn a point at the Stadium of Light, assisting Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second half goal.

Speaking to the media after the full-time whistle in Sunderland, the attacker was relieved the team were able to come from behind to earn an important point on the road.

“I think it is kind of a shame that we started the way we did because I think it wasn’t up to what we wanted to do and we kind of got it – we heard from the coach at halftime.

“We know we can play better than that so I think we started the second half really well. To get the goal as early as we did and to have as many chances as we did was tough but now it is about finishing the chances that we did [have].

“We need to keep going, of course. It is a long season. We wanted three points, of course, but to get an away point like that is huge, so we are really happy about it.”

Aaronson was then asked about his involvement in the fine move that brought Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser and, with the striker on the scoresheet yet again, offered an insight into what his teammate is like to play alongside.

“I was trying to stay a little bit wide. I want to be inside and get on the ball but, yeah, I kind of drifted out wide, and Anton played a great ball wide to me.

“Then I know I could go 1v1 and get a cross in because I always know he is in the right place at the right time, and he was!

“I can’t speak enough about the type of guy he is. He has come in, he has a great character, and even though there was a period of time where he was coming off the bench because he had an injury, you heard him every time.

“I think that is the character he is. He is an animal on the pitch and he is rewarding himself because of all the hard work and the character that he is.”
