Brentford outlasted Manchester United in an astonishing 4-3 win at the Gtech Community Stadium, as Kevin Schade inspired a sensational performance to seal The Bees’ fourth consecutive Premier League victory.

Ruben Amorim rotated his Manchester United side ahead of their UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club, handing a first start to Chido Obi-Martin and resting several senior figures. Though Mason Mount gave the visitors an early lead, Brentford were the better side throughout and turned the game on its head through an own goal from Luke Shaw and a brilliant brace from Schade.

Yoane Wissa added a fourth as United collapsed in the second half, before late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo threatened a comeback that ultimately fell just short.

As it happened

United opened the scoring against the run of play in the 14th minute. Kobbie Mainoo fed Garnacho on the left, and the Argentine’s low cross was met by Mount, who swept home past Mark Flekken.

Brentford responded swiftly and levelled on 27 minutes, when Michael Kayode’s long throw was eventually worked to Mikkel Damsgaard, whose shot deflected in off Shaw for an own goal.

The hosts continued to dominate and took a deserved lead on 33 minutes. Christian Nørgaard picked out Schade with a looping cross, and the German winger powered a header into the bottom corner.

United lost Matthijs de Ligt to injury shortly after and saw Brentford go close again before the break. At half-time, the Bees had recorded a higher expected-goals tally and created the better chances.

Schade doubled his tally on 70 minutes, meeting Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery to make it 3-1. Just four minutes later, Brentford added a fourth. Mathias Jensen played in Kayode, whose unselfish square pass was converted by Wissa.

United pulled one back through Garnacho on 82 minutes after a smart exchange with Christian Eriksen, before Diallo added a stoppage-time third to set up a dramatic finale. However, Brentford held on through seven minutes of added time to earn a famous win.
