Brentford booked their place in the League Cup quarter-finals with a commanding 5-0 win over Grimsby Town at Blundell Park tonight.

The Mariners defeated Manchester United on their way to the fourth round, but the Bees were determined to avoid a similar fate

Mathias Jensen opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, capitalising on a defensive error to curl home a precise finish from the edge of the area.

Keane Lewis-Potter doubled the advantage four minutes later with a neat header after a well-worked move involving Frank Onyeka and Reiss Nelson.

Nelson added a third before the interval with a low drive from distance that effectively ended the contest.

The Bees’ dominance silenced the home crowd, who had arrived in full voice expecting another giant-killing night.

Grimsby had shown early promise, with Evan Khouri and Jaze Kabia both missing chances when the game was still goalless.

However, Brentford’s sharpness and pressing soon took control, exposing the difference between Premier League precision and League Two endeavour.

Any hope of a comeback vanished eight minutes into the second half when Fabio Carvalho was brought down in the box and calmly converted the resulting penalty.

Substitute Nathan Collins later completed the rout with a powerful header from Jensen’s corner to make it five.

Despite making nine changes from their Premier League win over Liverpool, Keith Andrews’ side produced a clinical display that underlined their strength in depth.

Brentford have now reached the last eight of the competition for the fourth time in six seasons, continuing their reputation as one of the League Cup’s most consistent performers.

Grimsby’s run will be remembered fondly by their supporters. Having stunned Man United and Sheffield Wednesday, the Mariners’ spirited campaign captured the imagination.
