Brentford fans seeing their team make it through to the last eight of the League Cup.

Interesting them to see what their reaction and comments (see below) have been, after drawing Newcastle United in the quarter-finals.

Happy memories almost exactly four years ago to the day, as on 22 December 2020 Brentford fans saw their Championship side win 1-0 in a League Cup quarter-final against… Newcastle United.

Rather bizarrely, Steve Bruce choosing to play a much weakened Premier League Newcastle United eleven that night, as they meekly went out to second tier opposition.

That game was in West London and with no supporters in attendance during the Covid days.

This time at St James’ Park it will be sold out but how are Brentford fans looking forward to it…

Brentford fans with comments when the initial draw was made, then more recently once date confirmed and ticket allocation, commenting via their Griffin Park Grapevine forum:

INITIAL REACTION AFTER DRAWN AWAY AGAINST NEWCASTLE UNITED:

‘Newcastle away or Christmas gifts for the 2 kids?

Will see what missus says.’

‘Newcastle away fk.’

‘2 points from their last 5 premier league matches. WE CAN WIN THIS!!’

‘Night out in Newcastle just before Christmas. What’s not to like?’

‘Probably about as awful as it could be, a place we never win, mid week, too far to travel etc etc.’

‘Nightmare draw , never get anything up there.’

‘Had it coming after soft draws so far I suppose.’

‘Toon at home would have been a good draw. Away? Much less so.

I think they will play their strongest 11 and their fans will be really up for it.’

‘They will absolutely luv that draw , absolutely luv it.’

‘Agreeing to play Chelsea on Sunday at 7pm is not looking a great decision now…’

‘Newcastle fans very happy with a home draw. Difficult one for us but doable.’

‘Love the ground and love the city, but realistically that’s at least 1-1.5 days of annual leave for me to take, especially if it’s a coach up there. Just not feasible for me at the moment but I do hope we take a good following. Out of all the big teams, this lot are probably the most there for the taking IMO.’

‘Would we rather win this or the league game?’

‘This.’

‘We’ll win both, don’t you worry.’

‘Cracking trip and winnable.’

‘I thought the same thing the last time we played them there in the League Cup. 2001.

Owusu opened the scoring, before the Mackem Slayer (Ameobi) equalised.

Extra time here we go, so Sir Bobby Robson brings on Craig Bellamy who bags a hat trick.

Dream glory shattered.

Totally irrelevant to CUP FEVER in 2024, though. In Thomas Frank We Trust!’

‘Just feels a really silly week to be having these matches in the first place.’

‘Damned stupid, if you ask me.’

‘Lousy draw plus 3 games in six days. I’d be happy to see plenty of the fringe players in the team for this one.’

‘If ever Carlsberg did a worst post award.’

‘Not the best draw, I’ll never forget being hungover watching us make Shelvey look like prime Pirlo back in the Championship. Awful game, the beer made up for it.’

‘Signs we are a big club: moaning about a cup quarter final at Newcastle.’

‘Yep. We’d much better off playing Walsall away in the Pizza Hut Cup quarter final (or whatever it’s called these days!)’

‘First away league cup quarter final EVER . Must do game.’

‘A winnable tie.

Brentford to be lucky with injuries and any suspensions between now and then.

Get a few more back that are currently long term injured.

With an almost fully available first team squad the Bees can do this.’

‘Would have probably done club coach, although have said in the past would never do Newcastle away.

Would have been my last chance to do it (poor ole thing…!), but have just been ‘volunteered’ to do Jury Service that week!’

‘You can postpone jury service and do it another time. Tell them you’re on holiday and it’s booked!’

‘Just say Lindisfarne and that you are a Trappist Monk and its the anniversary of a Viking landing and along with many others we are to repel the invading hordes. Might work.’

‘Looking forward to this.

St James Park will be a beautiful sight…and hopefully a right result to go with it.’

‘Midweek, week before Xmas, can’t imagine too big a travelling support.

I’d rather the club took a smaller allocation rather than opening up to “previous purchasers” and the subsequent inevitable Newcastle fans invasion of our end.’

‘Flight there & overnight hotel .. it feels like a European Tour’

AFTER THE DATE CONFIRMED FOR MATCH AND TICKET ALLOCATION:

‘Whats our Allocation? Would love us to fill it but sadly i think we will struggle taking into consideration the distance and being a midweek. Hope I’m wrong.’

‘Initially 1,200.’

‘£20 is very good pricing. I just cant justify the time off and travel cost.’

‘Decent pricing. Was expecting more than that.’

‘Decent pricing but as I’ve already booked to take the Mrs away for her birthday that week I will be giving it a miss.’

‘She’ll have other birthdays, this is a rare event.’

‘2 tickets sorted. cant wait.’

‘Tickets – yes, hotel – yes, train – yes – first time to Newcastle since 1992-1993.’

‘First time for me since the championship match up there, x2 match tickets, flights from Dublin to Newcastle, Airbnb accommodation, all sorted and all 3 much cheaper than at a weekend.’

‘I can’t wait.’

‘Hotel and trains booked…only a venue after to celebrate our famous win to sort out now.’
