Brentford host Brighton in a Premier League showdown on Saturday, April 19th, at 3pm (UK time). Both teams have aspirations of qualifying for Europe and we’ve asked our man Anthony Eadson to preview the action and provide us with his best bets.
It’s been another fantastic season at Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo, who thrived after the departure of Ivan Toney. The Frenchman has scored 16 league goals in what has been his highest-scoring campaign at the club, and when it comes to hitting the target, he averages a healthy 1.1 per game.
In recent weeks, Mbeumo has also consistently given away fouls, recording totals of 1,2,1,2. This bet for him to record at least one shot on target and give away at least one foul has landed in three of his last four matches and at 7/4, with Paddy Power or Betfair, I think it’s a very backable price against a Brighton side who are winless in five across all formats.
Another Brentford forward who has performed well this season is Yoanna Wissa, who has managed an impressive 15 league goals. The Brentford man has scored 10 of those 15 goals in just 14 home appearances at the GTech Community Stadium. With Brentford failing to keep a clean sheet in their last six league outings, there is plenty of scope for him to add to his tally on Saturday.
Paired with Wissa to Score is Jan Paul van Hecke to be fouled one or more times in the match. The Brighton centre-back should return to the starting line-up after serving a suspension, and he has been fouled eight times in his last five league matches. His fouls-won totals in that period read 2,2,2,1,1, and he looks overpriced to continue that streak against Brentford.
Brighton are in danger of losing momentum heading into the final weeks of this season. A four-game winless run negates an impressive four-match winning streak that saw them catapulted into the European competition mix. The Seagulls are still within touching distance of qualifying for next season’s Europa League group phase, with only six points separating them in tenth and Aston Villa in seventh, there is still plenty to play for.
With the season drawing to a close, Brentford are looking to make it another top-ten finish. Since making their Premier League debut in 2021/22, they have only ended a campaign above 11th place once, in 2022/23, when Thomas Frank guided the Bees to ninth. Heading into the final six gameweeks, Brentford find themselves in 11th after winning 12 games while losing 13, but are only five points from the top half. The West Londoners, however, have been in mixed form, having won just one of their previous four league outings. It is even more miserable at home, with Brentford currently on an eight-game winless run at the Gtech Community Stadium (five losses and two draws).
Fábio Carvalho, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, will not be available for Brentford until next season. Joshua Dasilva and Igor Thiago are both ruled out with respective injuries. Aaron Hickey is nearing a return, but this game may come too soon.
Igor Julio is a long-term absentee for Brighton, which should welcome him back next season. Georginio Rutter, Adam Webster, Ferdi Kadioglu, Tariq Lamptey, and James Milner are all ruled out. Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma are both doubts and will need to be assessed closer to kick-off.
Brentford have won only one of their previous eight meetings with Brighton (four draws and three losses).
