Brian Brobbey may have scored three goals against Manchester City, but the Sunderland striker still ended up on the losing side after one of the Premier League’s most remarkable individual performances.

Brobbey netted a hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, but Sunderland were beaten 5-3 by Enzo Maresca’s side in an eight-goal thriller. Despite the defeat, the Dutchman reached several notable milestones with his treble.

Brobbey joins rare Premier League club

Brobbey became only the fifth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick and finish the match on the losing side. The last player to achieve the unwanted feat was Roque Santa Cruz, who scored three for Blackburn Rovers in a 5-3 defeat to Wigan Athletic in December 2007.

The other players were Matt Le Tissier (v Oldham in 1993 and v Forest in 1995), Dion Dublin (v Sheffield Wed in 1995) and Dwight Yorke (v Newcastle 1996).

Brobbey is also the fifth Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick, following Kevin Phillips, Darren Bent, Adam Johnson and Jermain Defoe.

His three goals also made him just the third player to score a Premier League hat-trick away at Manchester City, following Michael Owen for Liverpool in 2002/03 and Jamie Vardy for Leicester City in 2020/21.

Brobbey makes Dutch history

The Sunderland forward also became the ninth Dutchman to score a Premier League hat-trick, joining an impressive list that includes Dennis Bergkamp, Marc Overmars, Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie, Dirk Kuyt, Gini Wijnaldum and Justin Kluivert.
