Brighton opened their Amex campaign with a 3-0 friendly win over Roma, settling it inside 48 minutes as Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari delivered.

As reported by WeAreBrighton.com, Roma were unconvincing on their UK tour and Gian Piero Gasperini later labelled the display poor.

Rutter cut in from the right to rocket home from outside the box on the half hour. Ayari doubled the lead before the break, striking first time from 25 yards after Yankuba Minteh’s break from a Roma corner.

Three minutes after the restart, Diego Gomez and Rutter combined down the right, the Frenchman pulling back for Ayari to finish. Mile Svilar had earlier tipped over from Rutter, while Roma’s best chance saw Wesley scoop onto the roof of the net from six yards.

Paulo Dybala had flashes but the visitors rarely threatened.

There were positive signs at centre back, with Olivier Boscagli and club-record signing Luka Vuskovic looking composed before Lewis Dunk arrived at half time. Vuskovic twice went close from corners, one header wide and one against a post.

Without Danny Welbeck, Brighton appeared narrower, playing through midfield rather than slinging crosses. Kaoru Mitoma is out after hamstring surgery and Minteh needed help off on the hour with what looked like a dead leg.

Off the pitch, matchday tweaks included Higgidy replacing Piglets Pantry and pints priced at £7.70. The new East Stand camera angle is likely a one-off, with filming set to face the West Stand when the Premier League returns.
