Jack Hinshelwood struck twice in 79 first-half seconds as Brighton thumped Aston Villa 4-0 on opening day. It was their biggest opening-day league win since Mansfield Town 6-0 in 1999.
According to WeAreBrighton.com, Brighton were excellent throughout as Villa fell apart, and the ratings are based on fans’ marks on social media.
Albion went ahead when Maxim De Cuyper’s effort crashed off the post and rebounded in off Victor Lindelof. De Cuyper soon steered in Georginio Rutter’s pass for 2-0. Hinshelwood then scored in the 30th and 31st minutes, the second arriving after Yasin Ayari dispossessed Joao Gomes.
De Cuyper shone on the wing behind only Hinshelwood in the ratings, and looks far more suited there than at left back. Luka Vuskovic impressed on his Premier League debut, his switch starting the third.
Lewis Dunk, making his 300th Premier League appearance, sent Rutter clear with a fine ball before the second. Olivier Boscagli handled left back securely with Ferdi Kadioglu out injured, freeing De Cuyper to attack.
With Ollie Watkins absent amid talk of a potential switch to the Saudi Sportswashing League, Bart Verbruggen did not have a save to make. Mats Wieffer started at right back then finished in midfield and could feature there if Ayari departs for Roma or Borussia Dortmund before the window closes.
From the bench, Costinha hit the post with his first touch and Charalampos Kostoulas was flagged offside on the rebound. Ibrahim Osman appeared to be fouled by John McGinn but referee Peter Bankes waved play on. Zadok Yohanna looked fearless if still learning.
