New Brighton signing Matt O’Riley will require an operation after suffering a serious injury just six minutes into his debut.

A day after breaking the outgoing Scottish transfer record when signing from Celtic, he was thrust straight into the Seagulls’ starting line-up for their EFL Cup clash with Crawley.

But a horror tackle in the early stages saw him taken out of the game and an update from Fabian Hürzeler has not brought good news.

“As expected it is a bad injury. He needs surgery on his ankle. I can’t say how long we expect him to be out,” the Brighton boss told reporters on Thursday morning.

“We need to see how rehab goes. We’ll support him and try to have him back as fast as possible.”

The 23-year-old had also been named in the latest Denmark squad for their Nations League clash, which he will now play no part in.
