A 72-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion supporter died after falling ill while leaving the Amex following the win over Aston Villa. He became unwell as he went to board a supporters’ club coach in the coach park.
The club said in a statement that, despite the best efforts of emergency services and staff, the medical team were unable to save him. It added that the loss had shocked and saddened everyone at the club, and offered condolences to his family and friends.
Fans had been heading home in good spirits after a flying start to the new Premier League season in the Falmer sunshine. For many, it was likely the first visit since the Manchester United match three months earlier, and four first-half goals left a contented mood.
South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics, St John’s Ambulance, Sussex Police, MB Medical Solutions, the club’s crowd doctor and stewards all worked together at the scene.
Prolonged CPR was administered at the scene.
