Another huge clash in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League as the Reds take the trip to the south coast in search of three valuable points. Arne Slot & Co. will have woken up this morning with renewed optimism after seeing Manchester United drop points on their own journey to the seaside, having drawn 2-2 at Bournemouth on Friday evening.

Liverpool begin the weekend in fifth place, which will be enough for a Champions League spot next season despite a disastrous week for teams at Europe’s top table, but with Aston Villa two points ahead, and more importantly, Chelsea one point behind - the pressure to pick up points is paramount for all involved.

Slot will be without Mohamed Salah, which could be a blessing in disguise given how his season has panned out thus far, but does mean the under-pressure head coach has a few decisions to make both in attack and defence. Hurzeler has sympathy for Slot

Fabian Hurzeler says he has some sympathy for Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who is under pressure less than a year after winning the Premier League title.

"Football sometimes is not fair," Hurzeler said on Friday. "He won the Premier League, he's doing an incredible job, he's having a really good style of football, he's trying to develop the players.

"He always finds good solutions. You sometimes feel for your colleague. I went through a tough period so I can imagine how tough it is for him but I'm 100 per cent certain he'll find a way out of it."

Rare injury blow for Salah

Mohamed Salah is facing a race to be fit for Liverpool's FA Cup quarter-final at Manchester City after the international break.

Salah's absence is a setback as the Egypt international, who scored in three of his last four starts, had put in one of his best performances of the season in midweek.

However, when the 33-year-old gestured to the bench to be taken off after scoring the omens were not good.

"Indeed, unusual and as a result of that you can expect the outcome: he's not available for tomorrow," said Slot ahead of the trip to Brighton.

"The good thing for Liverpool is we go to an international break, and the bad thing for Egypt is that he can't go there.

"We're hoping with what Mo has shown in the past that he can recover faster than other players in similar situation because he takes such good care of his body.

"History has shown he can be back earlier than some others, but it's only two weeks until we go again, so let's hope in that period of time he can be back."

Salah has proved to be incredibly resilient during his Liverpool career, missing just 10 Premier League matches through injury since joining in 2017, and this is his first since a hamstring problem in January 2024.

Why Alisson will be missing today

Alisson Becker is absent this afternoon.

Alisson has only just returned to action for Liverpool following a fitness issue that forced him to miss the Champions League last-16 first leg defeat to Galatasaray last week.

The 33-year-old was back in goal five days later as the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham and kept his place for the 4-0 second leg win over the Turkish side on Wednesday night.

However, Alisson is set to be left out of the Liverpool matchday squad for the crucial Premier League showdown against Brighton having withdrawn from international with Brazil due to injury.

A statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation reads: “Goalkeeper Hugo Souza is called up to the Brazilian National Team.

“He will replace Alisson, who is sidelined due to injury.”

It is not known yet whether Alisson will be available for Liverpool’s first game after the international break which is away at Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Score prediction

This should be a good game, an open one that both Slot and Hurzeler will enjoy. Brighton have shown they can cause problems for the so-called bigger teams and are on a decent run.

Liverpool will know the importance of signing off for the international break with a win to boost their hopes of a top-four finish.

We expect this to be a game full of goals with Liverpool coming out on top.

Liverpool to win, 4-2.

Early Liverpool team news

Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker this afternoon.

Salah scored against Galatasaray, but then requested to be substituted with a knock. He has now been ruled out for a number of week with an "unusual" injury.

It was announced on Friday that Alisson Becker had pulled out of the Brazil squad because of a new injury scare, so Giorgi Mamardashvili will deputise today.

With Salah not fit, Jeremie Frimpong is an option to play further forward on the right wing, thus reprising his role from the 1-1 draw against Tottenham last weekend.

Though that could mean Dominik Szoboszlai is asked to fill in at right-back once again, despite impressing in his more natural No10 role in the win over Galatasaray.

Joe Gomez was an unused substitute on Wednesday and Slot has confirmed that he is not ready to start against Brighton.

Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo are all options to come into the side, while Rio Ngumoha may have to settle for a place on the bench despite being Liverpool’s best attacker against Spurs.

Alexander Isak is not ready to return yet, while Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni are all long-term absentees.

Early Brighton team news

Brighton will be without long-term absentees Stefanos Tzimas and Adam Webster for the visit of Liverpool, but Kaoru Mitoma will return from injury.

Mitoma picked up a knock in the 1-0 loss to Arsenal at the beginning of the month and subsequently missed last weekend’s victory over Sunderland.

Fabian Hurzeler said at the time that the injury was not “big” and Mitoma is in contention to face Liverpool, while Carlos Baleba is also fit.
