Brighton travel to Barnsley on Tuesday, aiming to put a frustrating weekend behind them and begin a meaningful Carabao Cup run.
After throwing away a two-goal lead in the dying moments against Tottenham on Saturday, a convincing performance against League One opposition is needed to restore confidence and momentum.
The Seagulls also have a point to prove in this competition. The club has not progressed beyond the fourth round of the EFL Cup since 1979, an incredibly poor record that they will be desperate to change.
Therefore, manager Fabian Hurzeler will be keen for his side to take this opportunity seriously and build a platform for a potential cup run.
Fabian Hurzeler is expected to make wholesale changes from the side that drew with Tottenham. This provides a chance for experienced players like James Milner and promising youngsters like Brajan Gruda and Georgios Tzimas to impress.
The manager’s options are limited by injuries, however. He remains without long-term absentees Adam Webster and Solly March, while Jack Hinshelwood has also been ruled out for the long term with a ligament injury. Jason Steele is tipped to deputise for Bart Verbruggen in goal.
Brighton predicted XI: Steele; Wieffer, Boscagli, Kadioglu, Veltman; Coppola, Gruda; Ayari, Milner, Gomez; Tzimas.
The Carabao Cup fixture will be played at Oakwell on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45 pm BST.
The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports+ in the UK. Coverage begins at 7:30 pm BST.
