It has been claimed that some figures at Bristol City are not please with how Tommy Conway has been treated by boss Liam Manning.
Liam Manning’s treatment of Tommy Conway at Bristol City is not believed to have gone down well with some figures at the club.
With Conway’s contract expiring in 2025, the Robins have been looking to secure the forward on a long-term deal.
However, the Scotland international has turned down those offers, which prompted Manning to send the player to train with the U21s, ahead of a potential summer sale.
Manning is clearly looking to work with players during pre-season that will be at his disposal moving forward throughout the season.
Yet, the decision to banish Conway to the U21s is a bold one, as the 21-year-old, who was born in Taunton, has been with the Robins since he was seven, so he has Bristol City close to his heart. Plus, there has been no indication that his professional standards dropped whilst the contract talks were ongoing.
With that in mind, Football Insider has stated that ‘staff and players are believed to be upset’ with how Manning has handled the situation.
There is a feeling that he could continue to work with the senior side, even if a summer move still comes to fruition.
Manning is gearing up for his first full season in charge at Ashton Gate, and this is an example of how he is trying to raise the standards and drive the culture.
He is looking to create an environment where everyone is pulling in the same direction, and he wants a group that is fully committed.
Obviously, some will dispute the idea that Conway couldn’t be part of it, but the reality is that he is highly likely to move on in the window, so Manning is focusing on the squad that he expects to have when the deadline passes.
It has been reported in the past that Wolves, Celtic and Rangers were among the clubs keeping tabs on Conway, and the latest update has reiterated the latter’s desire to bring him to Ibrox as Phillipe Clement searches for new attacking threats.
The contract issue makes the attacker a particularly appealing option for the Glasgow duo, as they could potentially reach a pre-contract agreement with Conway in January.
Furthermore, if he did move to Scotland once his deal with Bristol City had expired, the compensation that would be required would be a lot less than a move to an English side.
So, in an ideal world, Bristol City would cash in on Conway this summer for a fee that reflects his true ability and potential.
This could be something that drags out over the coming weeks, and it will be interesting to see if Manning’s stance changes if it looks as though Conway may not get a move this summer.
Bristol City have strengthened their attack with the signing of Sinclair Armstrong, with the Irishman joining the club from Queens Park Rangers in a deal worth around an initial £2.5m.
