Promise Omochere looks set to join the Matt Taylor revolution at the Memorial Ground
Bristol Rovers are said to have won the race to sign Fleetwood Town forward Promise Omochere, after seeing off competition from League One rivals Barnsley.
That’s according to Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, who claims that the Gas have stumped up more than £500,000 to bring the exciting attacker to the Memorial Ground this summer.
The Sun journalist Alan Nixon revealed earlier this month that the Tykes had a firm interest in the 23-year-old, but it is Rovers who have won the race for his signature after throwing their name into the ring last week.
The front man featured in 34 matches for the Cod Army as they suffered relegation from the third tier in the previous campaign, and found the back of the net six times for the Highbury outfit.
To fend off divisional rivals to the signature of the former Bohemians man will be seen as something of a coup for Rovers, as Matt Taylor continues to ready his squad for the upcoming campaign.
With the Lancashire side putting a £500,000 price tag on their forward’s head earlier this summer, it marks a real sign of intent from the Gas, with Omochere said to be a player that was on their radar following Town’s relegation.
With less than 12 months remaining on his contract, Charlie Adam’s side were destined to lose one of their main attacking threats this summer, but look to have been well reimbursed for his services.
Having joined the club from Irish side Bohemians in the summer of 2022, the exciting attacker made an instant impact at Highbury, with seven goal contributions in his first season in English football, before replicating that in the year just gone.
In what proved to be a long, hard season for the Cod Army, Omochere gave glimmers of hope along the way, with vital strikes to earn points against Exeter City and Northampton Town, as well as the opener in a 3-3 draw with rivals Blackpool earlier in the campaign.
With Matt Taylor getting to work in his first summer transfer window with Rovers, the former Rotherham United boss has looked to put his own stamp on the side.
The Gas have been busy bringing in top talent from across the Football League in the past few weeks, with Isaac Hutchinson one of the players recruited from League Two Walsall, while Ruel Sotiriou [pictured] joins from Leyton Orient.
Jamie Lindsay has joined up with his old boss after leaving the Millers this summer, while fullbacks Clinton Mola and Joel Senior join from Reading and Morecambe respectively.
Bryant Bilongo, Dan Ellison and Taylor Moore have also signed on the dotted line to move to the West Country in the past few weeks, as a massive rebuild continues to take shape for the side that finished 15th in League One last season.
With West Bromwich Albion loanee Josh Griffiths and Michael Forbes being borrowed from West Ham United, the nucleus of a strong third tier squad is developing at the Memorial Stadium, and Omochere’s addition will add an extra dimension in the final third.
