Brito, a starting centre-back for Brazil’s 1970 World Cup winners, has died aged 86, the Brazilian federation announced on Thursday, adding that president Samir Xaud regarded him as one of the greatest defenders in the country’s football history.
Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in the 1970 final.
During that tournament he formed a formidable central pairing with Piazza.
Born in 1939 in Rio de Janeiro, he won 46 caps and was a contemporary of Pelé and captain Carlos Alberto, his team-mates in 1970.
He spent most of his club career with Vasco da Gama, winning four Rio de Janeiro state titles.
