The Portugal international then cut apart Aston Villa with a through ball for Matheus Cunha, who finished with calm into the far corner. The assists were Fernandes’s 15th and 16th in the Premier League this season, double the total of the next highest player (Rayan Cherki – 8).

His latest assists also saw Fernandes break a club record for the most goals created in a single Premier League campaign. David Beckham previously held the record for Manchester United after notching 15 assists during the 1999-2000 campaign.

Fernandes is also now four goals from equalling the all-time Premier League record for assists in a single campaign. The current mark of 20 is held jointly by Thierry Henry (2002-03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20).
