Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is facing a possible spell on the sidelines after suffering a soft tissue injury during Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa.

Fernandes appeared to hurt his hamstring in the first half after pulling up while running. He played on until half-time but was replaced by Lisandro Martinez at the break and was later seen walking uncomfortably along the touchline.

United head coach Ruben Amorim admitted the injury could rule his captain out for a number of matches.

“I think it’s soft tissue, so it’s going to take a while. We’ll see,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “I think he is going to lose some games, but I don’t know for sure.”

The timing is far from ideal for United, who are already dealing with several absences. Kobbie Mainoo was ruled out with a calf injury picked up in training, while Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Casemiro missed the Villa trip through suspension, with Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt also sidelined.

Lisandro Martinez filled in as a makeshift midfielder in the second half at Villa Park as Amorim reshuffled his side.
