Manchester United want the control offered by gifted passers, but their slow start has exposed the physical cost of that choice. Bruno Fernandes remains the player most capable of rescuing the idea and the one most burdened by its weaknesses.

Bruno Fernandes began the Premier League season wearing the glow of an extraordinary previous campaign. The Maia-born midfielder had carried Manchester United back into the Champions League, created 21 goals for teammates and collected the major individual awards. Five matches later, United have five points and the old questions have returned around them. Defeat at promoted Hull punctured the optimism immediately. A derby loss to Manchester City and draws at Everton and another at Fulham have made the Ipswich rout feel like an isolated afternoon rather than the beginning of something.

The contrast is uncomfortable. Michael Carrick has built a midfield intended to put the ball at the feet of intelligent passers. When it works, Fernandes receives possession between the lines with runners ahead of him. When it fails, United can look slow, open and dependent on their captain producing something that the system has not earned. That distinction now feels painfully important.

Five matches have repriced United

As the Premier League pauses for its first international break, United occupy a different position from the one they held in August. Third place last season made a title challenge conceivable. Five games and five points have taken them from possible challengers to severe outsiders. The title odds reflect as much.

United defend through a compact mid-block instead of chasing opponents man for man. If the distances between teammates remain correct, the approach conserves energy and protects central areas. Once one line is bypassed, however, the next defender can be asked to solve a problem at speed.

That helps explain why a team capable of monopolizing the ball can suddenly appear passive. It also leaves Fernandes covering two jobs. The Portuguese captain must find the ambitious pass when United have possession, then help close the route exposed if it goes astray.

The captain cannot supply every answer

Nothing in Fernandes’ record suggests decline. His PFA Player of the Year award followed a league-record 21 assists and United’s rise from 15th to third. He has also scored in a 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah this season.

The burden becomes clearer when United dominate without winning. They generated 29 attempts at Fulham but needed Matheus Cunha’s 89th-minute equalizer to escape with a 1-1 draw. Much of that volume came from distance. Fernandes was left trying to find an opening against opponents who could then play through United once possession changed.

Fernandes personifies the tension without creating it. His appetite for the difficult ball gives United imagination that safer midfielders cannot reproduce. It also means surrendering possession occasionally. A balanced side absorbs those failures and gives its creator another opportunity. Carrick’s United have too often allowed one missed connection to become a defensive emergency.

The break gives Carrick time to decide how much freedom his captain can carry. Asking Fernandes to become cautious would remove the quality United need most. Giving him better protection would allow the Portuguese midfielder to keep taking the risks that once placed his team among England’s challengers.
