Bruno Fernandes’ long‑term Manchester United future is increasingly uncertain.
Not long ago, The Peoples Person relayed a report suggesting that the United squad feels Fernandes has grown tired of the chaos at Old Trafford. The implication was clear: the United skipper could look to leave the club at the end of the season.
Yet, as influential as the Portuguese magnifico remains, as was abundantly clear in the Manchester derby win, he still has so much to offer. He cannot simply walk away from that.
Certainly, United must resist losing such a key figure, a Mr Reliable in every sense. But, unfortunately, a player of his brilliance will never be short of suitors.
The Saudi Pro League continues to dream of signing him, while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also said to be closely monitoring his situation.
Notably, Rob Dawson has now revealed United’s strategic plan to avoid a controversial Fernandes summer 2026 exit.
On ESPN, Dawson explained:
“Fernandes came close to joining Al Hilal last summer, and there is expected to be more interest in the Portugal international at the end of the current campaign.”
While the talks will aim to convince Fernandes he still has a central role to play, Dawson adds:
“United will let the 31‑year‑old decide his next step. However, the club’s preference is to keep their captain in what will be another transitional summer, with a new permanent manager set to arrive to replace Ruben Amorim.”
Fernandes leaving this summer would undoubtedly spark controversy.
The Red Devils are yet to identify a player capable of replicating what Fernandes brings to the table. His goals, 103, and assists 96 will be difficult to replicate by a midfielder.
United are at their best with him, so retaining his services must remain a top priority. It makes sense that they are scheduling crunch talks and working to persuade him to stay.
Nevertheless, United must also confront the near‑impossible task of identifying a suitable heir. Wherever that player may be, it is inevitable that Fernandes will one day depart.
Therefore, the successor needs to arrive sooner rather than later, ideally serving as his understudy in the meantime. And West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes could be that player.
