Bruno Genesio says Champions League talk is off the table for now, arguing Marseille’s aims must reflect a constrained summer with the window closed. The squad is effectively locked in at least until January.
According to GetFootballNewsFrance.com, financial commitments to the DNCG and UEFA left the entire squad available at the right price. Despite high-profile exits, including Mason Greenwood, Facundo Medina, Leonardo Balerdi and Geronimo Rulli, the club were not permitted to reinvest in signings.
There was late jeopardy for key man Igor Paixao on deadline day, but he stayed. “The winter transfer window? We will have another headache. We have four months of respite,” said Bruno Genesio ahead of Sunday’s game against Paris FC.
Setting out the limits of their targets, Genesio added: “To speak about the Champions League would be irresponsible for me. That would be lying to our supporters. At Marseille, you have to be ambitious… but I won’t tell you not to dream. We are under construction.”
Last season, Marseille aimed for the Champions League but fell short, qualifying for the Europa League instead. After two Ligue 1 matches this term, they have one win, 4-0 against Strasbourg, and one defeat, 2-0 at Monaco.
