Bruno Genesio’s paradox at Lille, fine season yet closer to leaving than extending

On the brink of steering Lille straight into the Champions League after a stirring climb, Bruno Genesio, in charge since 2024 and out of contract, is nevertheless closer to leaving than extending. In January, Olivier Létang signalled via Le Figaro that he wanted him to stay, while noting the choice was not his alone.

Lille were 11 points off third in mid-February, yet a 13-match unbeaten streak, eight wins and five draws, has lifted them into the top three, one point ahead of OL and two clear of Rennes. Beating Auxerre at home on Sunday would be decisive.

Paradoxically, that game could be Genesio’s last in charge. He has said any decision will hinge on conditions that need clarifying and, contacted on Monday, insisted his focus was AJA, while Létang refused to discuss individuals before 23:00 on Sunday.

The current tendency remains towards a separation, with a meeting scheduled early next week between the board and Genesio to settle the next steps, and a press conference expected to follow.

After personal setbacks this year, Genesio has rebuilt a strong collective despite major departures last summer, enhancing his standing and drawing links to OM and Nice.

Lille have explored alternatives, holding talks with ex-midfielder Stéphane Dumont, who says he will stay at Troyes after promotion. Thiago Motta has also been discussed, though he would not be a priority, and finishing third would spare early August qualifiers.
