The last 16 tie burst into life, with Sander Berges briefly thinking he had put Norway ahead before an offside call chalked it off in the third minute.

Soon after, Matheus Cunha was brought down in the area and Brazil won a penalty inside the opening quarter-hour.

Guimaraes stepped up, but Orjan Nyland dived left to push away the Newcastle midfielder’s stuttering run-up effort in the 14th minute.

Zico was the previous Brazilian to fail from the spot at a World Cup, missing in the 1986 quarter-final against France before Brazil went out 1-1, 3-4 on penalties.
