Magpies set to be without some key players for Crystal Palace clash

Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes is not available to face Crystal Palace this weekend after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, Eddie Howe has confirmed.

The Brazilian midfielder has not appeared for the Geordies since coming off with a hamstring injury late in February’s defeat of Tottenham.

He returned to his home country to continue his recovery and it was hoped he could recover in time for last month’s Tyne-Wear Derby.

His name was once again absent from the teamsheet, though, and in a statement issued on his Instagram he claimed he had been suffering with mumps.

Magpies manager Howe has now confirmed that the illness got in the way of his injury rehabilitation, ruling him out of this weekend’s trip to Selhurst Park.

“Bruno suffered from mumps on his return from Brazil, so that's delayed his return and he will not be involved in the next game,” he explained.

“I think there is probably a doubt over the Bournemouth game as well for him.”

Howe made clear, though, that Guimaraes’ injury had not worsened, simply that his illness had slowed his recovery.

“No injury concern, more just the illness stopped him doing some key work that we needed him to do to be considered for these games.

“So he may be the game after, but it is important he comes back when he is ready.”

Howe issued a further three fitness updates ahead of the journey to southeast London, adding that Fabian Schar is set to miss out while Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley are fit and available.

“Fabian [Schar] unfortunately suffered an infection in his foot so he has been in hospital having a very small operation to get that cleaned out. So he won't return for around a month, we think, so that is bad news on him.

“On everybody else, we are pretty good. Lewis [Miley] has trained and trained well with us, so that has been a great thing for us to see because we have missed him massively.

“And then of course you had Sandro [Tonali] who played during the international break anyway, with his injury after the Sunderland game, and others are in a good place.”

Defenders Emil Krafth and Sven Botman are both sidelined, too.
