Bordeaux have suspended head coach Bruno Irles after a 1-3 home defeat to Chauray on matchday 23 that jeopardises their push for Ligue 3, with Rio Mavuba expected to step in.
According to L'Équipe, the board removed him from first-team duties and suspended him on Sunday. Irles, previously in charge of Troyes and Quevilly, took over in summer 2024 after relegation to National 2.
The club missed promotion last season, finishing fourth in Group B, though Gérard Lopez kept faith with Irles. Fearing another setback, and with the team second in Group A, six points behind La Roche-sur-Yon, the hierarchy acted.
Mavuba, a former international and the club’s under-16s coach, is expected to be on the bench next Saturday at Locminé. He is regarded as a local legend.
The target now is to finish as the best second-placed team across Groups A, B and C in National 2. In that scenario, Bordeaux would be promoted if a club in Ligue 1, Ligue 2 or Ligue 3 drops out, and several teams could face DNCG administrative relegation at season’s end.
