Former Benfica head coach Bruno Lage has suffered a new setback, with long-serving staff member Jhony Conceição announcing his departure from Lage’s coaching team in an Instagram post. Lage has been out of a job since mid September 2025.
Conceição had been part of Lage’s set-up since 2013/14, when the pair worked together at Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates. He previously served as assistant coach to Portugal’s beach soccer national team.
Reflecting on their shared journey, he noted it began in July 2018, spanned 2,842 days and covered 226 matches across 16 competitions, bringing four trophies.
He said their bond had grown beyond the professional, built on friendship, admiration, gratitude and mutual respect.
Conceição added that they were closing a chapter while carrying the experiences and achievements made together, and he thanked Lage for his trust, example and demanding standards.
He called it an honour and a privilege to share the journey, suggested their paths might cross again and wished Lage the success he believes the coach deserves.
