Manchester United saw off stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United to secure the signature of Bryan Mbeumo this summer.

The Cameroonian was coming off an impressive campaign with Brentford, scoring 20 goals and setting up nine more in 42 appearances across competitions.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, had managed just 44 goals in 38 league games and were determined to revamp their attack ahead of the new campaign.

After a prolonged pursuit, United finally got their man, reportedly paying the Bees £65 million up front, with a further £6 million in add-ons.

One of United’s best players this season

Mbeumo started with a sizzling debut against Arsenal that had everything but the goal. The Cameroonian then endured mixed emotions against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup second round tie.

Coming off the bench at Blundell Park, Mbeumo scored his first goal for United to spark a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. Unfortunately, he missed his second penalty in the shoot-out, which ultimately saw the Red Devils bow out of the tournament.

However, the 26 year old made amends by scoring against Burnley in the Premier League two days later, and hasn’t looked back since. Mbeumo has grown in stature with each passing game, and now has five goals in 10 appearances across competitions for the Premier League giants.

The Cameroonian has started every game in the league this season and is fast becoming Amorim’s go-to man. His performances have been key in helping United pick up the pace after a slow start to the campaign.

A masterclass against Brighton

On Saturday, 25 October, Mbeumo scored a brace to help United secure a hard-fought 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. He has now been adjudged the Premier League’s Player of the Matchweek.

The Cameroonian follows in the footsteps of Harry Maguire, who claimed the award following his heroics against Liverpool a week earlier.

On Saturday, Mbeumo registered an 89% passing accuracy, made seven defensive contributions, and won two fouls. He attempted five take-ons, completing four of them and also managed four passes into the final third.

The former Brighton man registered four touches in the box, created two big chances, and attempted three shots.

Maguire and Mbeumo’s wins signify that United are on the rise at the moment; indeed, they have now won four of their last five games and sit sixth in the league.
