Budapest remained largely unfazed on Friday on the eve of the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal, kick-off 18:00 Saturday. English supporters were already in town, with most travelling fans still to arrive.
According to L'Équipe, a stroll through the city revives Euro 2021. Buda Castle, yellow trams, e-scooters and violin sounds along the Danube feel unchanged, with the chilly Marriott still facing the river.
The first hints of buzz appeared in pedestrian streets. On terraces, Arsenal fans gathered in clusters over pints under the gaze of burly Hungarian police. Shirts of Sol Campbell and Bukayo Saka mingled.
Around 20,000 PSG supporters are expected at Puskas Arena on Saturday, many due at MTK Sportpark from 11:00. On Friday they seemed outnumbered by the English. Some struck up 'Tous ensemble, on chantera' as fans in Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia and Doué shirts roamed.
Away from the centre, Kertem, an open-air beer garden, was a favoured rendezvous for PSG followers.
PSG’s players are based at the Anantara hotel in the city centre. At 19:00, after training, the bus dropped them off and about 20 people stopped to glimpse Luis Enrique’s squad. Everyone entering was asked to show ID.
Dinner for the players had not yet been served. Nearby, dozens of family members settled into a hotel and took in the warm evening on the quays. The city waited for the big night.
