Saka had been named in the Gunners’ starting lineup at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon but picked up an issue during the warm-up.

He went straight down the tunnel alongside an Arsenal physio and Noni Madueke quickly stepped in to join the main group with their final drills.

Madueke took his chance impressively, swinging in crosses to create Arsenal's first two goals. His ball in for Martin Zubimendi's header was his first Premier League assist for Arsenal.

Commentary during the 4-0 win suggested that Saka had suffered an injury to his left hip, but Arteta was typically coy in his post-match press conference in Yorkshire.

"So in the warm-up he had a little niggle," Arteta said of Saka.

"He wasn't comfortable to start the game so immediately we made a decision to make that change and bring Noni in and he was ready, because you cannot do that in two minutes.

"The way he prepares, the way he waited for an opportunity, I think it paid off today. He really impacted the team."

In an earlier broadcast interview, Arteta was asked how serious he thought the injury was and responded: "We don't know yet."

It is a quick turnaround now for Arsenal before they host Chelsea on Tuesday in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

Whether Saka is fit to feature in that game remains to be seen, but he will be assessed when the Gunners return to London.

Mikel Merino appears to be a doubt for that match, having missed the Leeds win with a foot problem.

The midfielder will see specialists to get a further assessment on an issue with the bone that has been causing him pain.

"He’s got an issue in his foot,” Arteta said before the game.

"It’s a bone that’s giving him some pain, and we have some exams.

"We need some more specialists to look at it and to see how long he will be out."
