Bukayo Saka says there is “nothing better than a late winner in football” after Gabriel scored in the 97th minute to beat Newcastle 2-1.

Arsenal fell behind in the first half after Nick Woltemade headed Newcastle in front, but Mikel Arteta’s side rallied in the second half and responded with two late headers, first from substitute Mikel Merino and then Gabriel.

Victory for the Gunners sees them close the gap to league leaders Liverpool to just two points, after a 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end.

Saka, who had been taken off in the 70th minute, admitted it was difficult to watch the end of the match on the sidelines, but could not be happier with how the game transpired.

“Unbelievable, nothing better than a late winner in football,” Saka said. “Speechless, I’m so happy.

“It’s tough when you’re on the bench and you can’t control the game it’s tough but when you have this guy [Mikel Merino] and big Gabi, I have big trust in my team-mates and we got the win today.”

After being denied a penalty via a lengthy VAR check early in the first half, the 24-year-old lamented the time it took referee Jarred Gillett to overturn his original decision, but believes justice was served in how the match unfolded.

“There are a few things we can speak about, for example the penalty. For me if we have VAR it is for a clear and obvious error and the fact that it took the ref that long to decide shows it is not a clear and obvious error.

“It is things like this that always go against us but today we got what we deserved and that’s why we are all so happy. It doesn’t matter now, does it?”
