As is often the case involving 1. FC Union Berlin in recent seasons, consistency has been the name of the game. It goes without saying that the club from the German capital go in and out of form throughout the campaign, but their league position is never in total jeopardy. They seem to keep themselves well clear of any relegation fears, but perhaps lack that individual quality to compete for Europe.
Boasting one of the better defences in the lower half of the table can be credited to their strong rearguard, headed by none other than Danilho Doekhi. Coming into the prime of his career at 27 years of age, he delivered a fine season playing every single minute of the Köpenick side's 34 league games – his reliability proved invaluable once more.
The centre-half also managed to finished as Union Berlin's joint-second top scorer with 5 in total, one behind Oliver Burke. Doekhi also helped keep 7 clean sheets while boasting the league's seventh-best duel success rate of 341 and twelfth-best distance covered of 359.7km highlighting his workrate. The only shame for Union is that an exit is likely this summer.
Danilho Doekhi's shining moment of the season came on Matchday 10 in a 2-2 draw with future champions Bayern Munich. Despite having an early goal ruled out, Union kept faith and eventually took the lead when the Netherlands defender converted with his right boot from a Janik Haberer corner. Parity would be restored before the break with a sensational Luis Díaz strike.
Another set-piece scenario on 83 minutes enabled Doekhi to wreak havoc again, steering home a tame clearance from Harry Kane. However, the English marksman had the last laugh, nodding in during injury time to deny the Köpenick club of a famous win. Regardless, alongside his 100% duel success, that game will go down as one of Doekhi's finest for FC Union.
Andrej Ilic picked up a pair of nominations from our team of writers, and rightfully so as the Serbian ended the campaign with a strong return of 5 goals alongside 9 assists. Fellow centre-half Leopold Querfeld and midfielder Rani Khedira claimed a vote each too – the former featured 31 times and was the league's eighth-best duel winner with 333 in total, while Khedira provided 5 goals and an assist.
