Aston Villa have displayed genuine ambition and impressive performances in the ongoing 2025/26 season. The club are competing across the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the UEFA Europa League, marking their first time in Europe’s second-tier competition in over 10 years.
Following a win against Chelsea in late December, Villa hit their best winning streak in the top flight since 1910, putting together eight straight victories. It was a run that showed exactly how much Unai Emery has raised the bar at Villa Park. Yet, despite all that progress, one player on loan has stayed on the sidelines of the story rather than becoming a key part of it, and that’s Jadon Sancho.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Borussia Dortmund have kept a close eye on Sancho throughout his loan spell at Villa, and the feeling inside the club have shifted. Managing director Lars Ricken confirmed their interest in Sport Bild, stating that Dortmund are looking at several players and doing the same with Jadon. What started as a simple observation has turned into a serious transfer chase.
Sancho will be a free agent in June when his five-year contract with Manchester United ends. Since United aren’t expected to offer a new deal, Dortmund can make a move for him without a transfer fee. German football journalist Christian Falk also told CaughtOffside that Dortmund now see a clear opening, noting the club believe they can get the best out of Sancho again, especially with Karim Adeyemi potentially leaving.
The doubts from earlier in the season have mostly disappeared, with scouts reportedly seeing better fitness and more confidence in his game. His stats at Villa are low, just two Premier League assists in 19 matches, but Dortmund are not looking for a goalscorer.
His 85.29% pass completion rate and 2.48 key passes per game show he works best as a playmaker who pulls the strings. The biggest hurdle is his reported £15 million annual salary, though word is that Sancho is willing to take a major pay cut to make the move happen. (Via Footy Stats)

Honestly, not much, and that might be the most important point of all. Villa brought Sancho in for his creativity, but Emery’s system never really seemed to suit the way he plays. He needs rhythm, freedom, and a team that let him drift inside to link play, rather than a strict setup that demands constant width. His expected assists numbers are actually world-class, even if no one is talking about them, which suggests the issue isn’t his talent, it’s the right environment for his skills.
Dortmund, on the other hand, know exactly what they’re getting, and that’s a winger who has already thrived in their system twice. The homecoming story is a nice narrative, but the logic behind it is just as strong. Across 118 Bundesliga games, Sancho had 40 goals and 54 assists for Dortmund, stats that belong to a completely different player than the one fans in England have grown frustrated with. The Aston Villa loan wasn’t a total waste; it kept him fit and playing at a high level. But Dortmund are right to look past the basic stats and see a player worth the gamble.
