Over the past month, it has become increasingly clear that Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is Real Madrid’s top defensive target for the summer.
The men in white, after all, have been working on finalising a target for a long time now and arrived at the German star’s name after much deliberation and elimination of potential free agent candidates for various reasons.
Now, however, AS bring to light that the situation of Schlotterbeck is also growing complicated with Dortmund pushing for a renewal with a clear plan in mind.
It has been stated clearly by multiple outlets that the centre-back wishes to change clubs at the end of the ongoing season and that he would not renew his contract which currently runs until 2027.
The arrival of Real Madrid onto the scene, however, has made Dortmund realise how fragile Schlotterbeck’s situation is and has triggered a reactive acceleration of matters to decide his future.

Indeed, Dortmund have now turned their immediate focus to securing the player’s future and are moving much faster than before towards securing the renewal of a player they see to be key for their future.
Dortmund will host a meeting with the defender and his entourage before mid-March and the entire board will be involved in that summit.
The objective will be to convey to the player how important he is to them and win his loyalty through not only economic adjustments but selling the idea of leadership and emotion.
The Bundesliga side have decided that Schlotterbeck’s future must be decided by the end of the month at any cost, irrespective of whether it is positive or negative from their standpoint.
Real Madrid, thus, can expect clarity over his future before April arrives and will know if he is a viable target or not.
The update does indeed bring tension to Los Blancos’ offices, and understandably so given that they have not yet made formal contact with the player.
