Matchday 10 in the Bundesliga provided unlikely late winners, in-form strikers impressing once again, historical dreadful starts, a new manager with an impressive result, and aura to match.
Here is your recap and talking points from matchday 10 in the Bundesliga.
Eintracht Frankfurt are possibly the most fun team to watch in the Bundesliga right now. 3rd in the table, Dino Toppmöller’s side have scored more goals than anyone else aside from Bayern Munich and have the outstanding Omar Marmoush in their ranks. The Egyptian scored an outrageous freekick from distance and assisted again last weekend as Frankfurt played out a thrilling 3-2 win over VfB Stuttgart. For Marmoush, it’s 11 goals and 7 assists in 10 Bundesliga games.
Frankfurt looked like they were cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory in Stuttgart on Sunday evening before two late goals made for an incredible finish. Stuttgart thought they had found a 97th minute equaliser, only for it to be ruled out for offside. The win leaves Frankfurt on 20 points, one point off RB Leipzig in second. If there is one team to watch right now, it’s Frankfurt.
For VfL Bochum, it’s been a rough start. Still winless this season, they’re looking odds-on to face relegation to the second division.
However, new head coach Dieter Hecking, guided his side to an unlikely point against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. The 60 year old hasn’t coached in the Bundesliga for five-and-a-half years but has already improved his side and clearly has them going in the right direction.
Formerly of Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hecking has instilled self-confidence back into the squad, something that was echoed in Gerrit Holtmann’s post-match comments.
“He is an outstanding coach with charisma and aura who gives us something,” said Holtmann. “You simply believe everything he says. He gave us security.”
Hecking remained modest after the game: “I would have been happy with the team even if we had lost 1-0. They played an excellent game. It’s never easy when you start working with a new coach who wants to bring in new things.”
Whether Hecking manages to pull-off a great escape with Bochum remains to be seen. However, you feel their first win is not too far away.
Borussia Dortmund suffered yet another setback last weekend as they were swept aside by Mainz 05, who won 3-1. With just 16 points from their opening 10 games, BVB are experiencing their joint-worst start to a Bundesliga campaign in a decade.
Head coach Nuri Şahin did have a number of injuries going into the game, including: Gregor Kobel, Waldemar Anton, Niklas Süle, Giovanni Reyna, Julien Duranville and Karim Adeyemi.
His side’s task didn’t get much easier when Emre Can was sent off for a reckless challenge in the 27th minute. Mainz took advantage and ran out 3-1 winners having completely dominated the rest of the match.
Dortmund currently sit in 7th and 10 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. Nuri Şahin’s side face a tough game against SC Freiburg in matchday 11 with many questioning just what this season has in store for BVB.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top to 5 points thanks to a superb goal from Jamal Musiala as they beat St. Pauli 0-1 in Hamburg.
Oliver Burke scored an 89th minute winner for Werder Bremen as they beat Holstein Kiel on the banks of the River Weser. The Scotsman has played just 34 minutes of football this season.
RB Leipzig v Borussia Mönchengladbach & FC Augsburg vs TSG Hoffenheim both ended in rare goalless draws whilst VfL Wolfaburg beat FC Heidenheim 3-1 away from home.
